Where do you teach lessons and camp, and where do we meet?

The lessons and surf camp locations will depend on the surf conditions, though we generally surf at Nauset Public Beach in Orleans, Nauset Outer Beach in Orleans and Marconi Beach in Wellfleet.

CAMP:  Once signed up for surf camp, you will receive a notification email including the start time of the camp.  Campers always meet at the Land Ho! restaurant in Orleans before heading to the beach, but the beach location of camp can change daily.

LESSONS: Like camp, surf lessons will also be at whichever beach makes the most sense based on conditions and access.  Meeting place for lessons is generally at the beach we identify for your lesson, unless otherwise agreed upon, and this information will be communicated to you via phone or email once you've signed up.

How old do you have to be for camp and lessons?

For our day camps, the required ages are 9-16, and the participant must be comfortable in the water and have basic swimming skills. For lessons, we will teach anyone at any age as long as they can swim, but anyone under the age of 7 must have a one-on-one lesson.

What happens if there’s bad weather?

Safety is our first priority, so we will cancel/postpone/reschedule lessons and camp if it’s necessary.  We will not go out in thunder/lightning storms, heavy fog, or if the waves are too big.  That being said, we WILL go out if it’s just rain showers and/or cloudy...you will be in the water anyway, what’s a few raindrops?

Are there sharks where we have lessons or camp?

Due to the ocean getting warmer and the presence of seals, sharks have been tagged in the Atlantic in recent years.  They are mainly seen off of Chatham where there are large seal colonies.  We do not surf in Chatham, and beach patrol, lifeguards and local officials are trained to keep an eye out for sharks, and to proactively alert beach goers should one venture north.  The Cape Cod Surf Camp instructors have had many years of experience surfing these waters and we are confident the beaches we hold camp and lessons at are safe.  We keep the kids close to shore, far away from seals,  and everyone is watched closely both in and out of the water.

What do I need to bring to lessons or surf camp?

For day camp and lessons, please bring a towel, bathing suit, sunscreen and hat/sunglasses.  You may want to bring a change of clothes and sweatshirt depending on the weather.  We provide wetsuits and boards (but if you wish to bring your own, that’s cool).  Water and snacks will be provided for campers.

What if the beach is closed?

If the beach parking lot is full, we will make every attempt to get you to the lesson.  If it’s just not possible, we can reschedule the lesson.  The best option is to get to the beach early and we’ll meet you there.

What if I’ve never surfed before?

No problem! Many of our clients have never been on a board before, but we guarantee by the end of camp, or after a lesson or two, you will be able to catch a wave, pop up on your board and ride it to the beach!  Even adults with no experience can learn!
